Luckily, Florida consumers with errors on their credit reports don’t have to wait for the credit bureaus to fix flawed credit reporting polices.

Bill Nelson, a U.S. senator representing Florida, recently released a report concerning consumer credit reports. Based on the information contained in this report, it appears that credit reporting practices are getting worse instead of better. This is in spite of intense scrutiny from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and numerous consumer advocacy groups. In the course of his investigation, this Florida senator found that U.S. consumers disputed more than 224 million mistakes on their credit reports between 2014 and 2016. But, sadly, only a little more than half of these reported errors were fixed by the credit bureaus. Also, this number only represents reported credit report errors.

As of right now, Senator Nelson estimates that there are “tens of millions of errors” lurking on consumer credit reports in Florida and throughout the country.

A Florida Senator’s Proposed Solution to the Problem of Flawed Credit Reporting Policies Within the Credit Bureaus

In his published report, the Florida senator identified two major problems with the three major credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian). First, he feels that the reporting agencies should take a more aggressive stance against creditors that provide inaccurate data. Next, Senator Nelson believes that the credit bureaus should simply the credit report error disputing process. He stated:

“There’s nothing more frustrating than discovering an error on your credit report, especially when it could result in being denied a loan, paying higher interest rates or even getting turned down for a job or an apartment. Unfortunately for consumers, once they’ve found a mistake they have nowhere else to turn but the big three credit reporting agencies. That’s why it’s imperative these companies do a better job of making it easier and faster for consumers to fix their credit report errors.”
