Georgia residents are usually pretty patient. This is a quality that comes naturally to Southerners. However, when it comes to bad credit, you want it fixed NOW. That’s understandable. Having a low credit score limits your opportunities and makes life harder than it needs to be. Luckily, there are several ways to fix your credit, but most of them take a little time to work. Honestly, the only way to increase your credit score immediately is to have all of the errors removed from your credit reports.

How Cleaning Up Your Credit Reports Can Increase Your Credit Score Immediately

You may be thinking, “Errors on my credit reports? How can there be errors on my credit reports?” Honestly, when it comes to credit reporting, mistakes happen a lot more often than you might imagine. In fact, about 80 percent of all credit reports contain inaccuracies of some kind. The scary part is that many of these credit report errors are significant enough to bring down credit scores.

The truth is that the three primary credit reporting bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax) aren’t perfect. Sometimes payments show inaccurately reported as late. Other times, negative items aren’t removed from credit reports when they should be. It’s also common for credit damage caused by identity theft to lurk on credit reports for far too long.

Fortunately, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”) helps to protect consumer rights. According to this statute, consumers are entitled to accurate, error-free credit reports. Credit bureau mistakes can be disputed in writing, and the responsible credit bureau will have 30 days in which to investigate the dispute. If they find that the consumer is right and they have in fact, reported an error, the incorrect item must be updated or removed from the credit report.

After an error is removed from your credit reports, it’s likely that your credit score will immediately improve. There is no telling how much your credit score will increase, but up is better than down in the world of credit scores, right?  This sounds like a pretty good deal, huh? Knowing this, you may be wondering why everyone in Georgia isn’t combing through their credit reports on a regular basis. That’s a good question. The truth is that a lot of consumers don’t know that: A) Credit report errors exist and B) These errors can be removed.

How Georgia Consumers Can Find and Dispute Credit Report Errors

In order to know whether or not you have credit report errors to dispute, you must first check your credit reports. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA), another federal statute, you have the right to request a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. Just go to www.annualcreditreport.com (a website that is authorized by federal law) to get credit reports from TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax.

Once you have your credit reports, look them over carefully to make sure that all of the information you see is accurate. Again, if you see something that is inaccurate, you should send a dispute letter to the appropriate credit bureau A.S.A.P. If, on the other hand, you want to save some time and possibly some frustration, you can get a FREE credit repair lawyer to clean up your credit reports for you. If you are uncertain as to how to read it, call us and we will go over it with you, for free.
